Synopsis: Set on Christmas Eve, 2004, in Palm Springs, Other Desert Cities centers on the wealthy, politically conservative Wyeth family. Their carefully maintained calm is disrupted when Brooke Wyeth, an estranged daughter and successful writer, returns home with news of an upcoming memoir that revisits a long-buried family tragedy. As debates over truth, loyalty, and memory erupt, old wounds resurface and each family member is forced to confront grief, love, and the cost of keeping secrets. The play blends sharp humor with emotional intensity to create a powerful portrait of a family at war with its own past.
Character Descriptions:
This audition notice is open to actors of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences. We strive to diversify casting to the greatest degree possible! Ages are approximate.
Brooke Wyeth — Female, mid-30s–40+ – A successful writer returning home after years of estrangement. Intelligent, emotionally guarded, and driven by a need to tell the truth, Brooke’s planned memoir about a family tragedy ignites the play’s central conflict. Requires depth, vulnerability, and sharp comedic timing.
Polly Wyeth — Female, mid- to late 60s+ – Brooke’s mother. Elegant, commanding, and politically conservative, Polly is fiercely protective of her family’s image. Her polished exterior conceals fear, grief, and moral rigidity. A strong role requiring authority, precision, and emotional complexity.
Lyman Wyeth — Male, mid- to late 60s+ – Brooke’s father. A former actor turned political insider, Lyman is charming, affable, and deeply invested in family harmony. Beneath his warmth lies avoidance and unresolved guilt. Requires warmth, humor, and quiet emotional weight.
Trip Wyeth — Male, 30+ – Younger son and reality TV producer. Easygoing, funny, and pragmatic, Trip often acts as mediator within the family. Provides humor while grounding the play emotionally. Strong comedic instincts with sincerity underneath.
Silda Grauman — Female, late 50s to early 70s – Polly’s sister. A sharp-witted, outspoken former screenwriter with a history of addiction. Unfiltered, unpredictable, and emotionally raw, Silda challenges family narratives while offering unexpected insight and compassion. A dynamic character role with humor and bite.
* An in-depth first meeting/reading-through will be held late January/early February and then actors will take time to get familiar with the script before scenework. Rehearsals begin late February into March. *
If you have further questions or would like to audition but can’t make either of the above times, contact director Lisa Woske at lwoske@calpoly.edu.
